Double-Deep Racking

More pallets per aisle, fewer aisles. A practical step up in density for operations running reach trucks.

Two Pallets Deep, One Aisle

Double-deep racking positions two pallets back-to-back in each bay, with the rear pallet accessed only after the front pallet is removed. A reach truck with a double-deep attachment extends its forks the extra distance to place and retrieve rear pallets — no aisle is needed between back-to-back rows.

More Density, Manageable Trade-Offs

Double-deep is a common upgrade from selective racking for operations where a large portion of SKUs are stored in multiple pallet quantities — reducing the selectivity cost because both positions typically hold the same SKU anyway.

  • Up to 50% more pallet positions per square foot vs. selective racking
  • Fewer aisles required — more floor space dedicated to storage
  • Best suited when multiple pallets of the same SKU are stored together
  • Requires a reach truck with double-deep attachment (pantograph)
  • Rear pallet is accessible only after front pallet is removed
  • Compatible with standard upright frames; beams span the same as selective
  • Strong fit for distribution centers, retail DCs, and food & beverage storage

Key Parameters

~50%
Selectivity
Only the front pallet in each position is directly accessible — rear pallet requires front pallet removal first.
2
Pallets Deep
Two pallets stored back-to-back per bay face. Bay depth typically 84–96" depending on pallet size.
Reach
Forklift Required
Reach truck with double-deep (pantograph) attachment required. Wider mast than standard reach truck.

Also Consider

Selective Racking

Full selectivity, single-deep. Best where every pallet is a different SKU or FIFO sequencing is required.

Push Back Racking

2–6 pallets deep on LIFO carts. Higher density than double-deep where pallet-per-SKU counts support it.

Drive-In Racking

Maximum density, LIFO. For bulk storage of one or few SKUs where selectivity is not a priority.
